The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is a tax that is charged each year to anyone who operated a vehicle on public highways that weigh over 55,000 pounds or more. Today we are going to talk about exactly what this tax will cost you and who is exempt from paying it.

What is the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290?

First, you should understand exactly how the truck is weighed to determine the cost of your tax.  The truck is first weighed completely unloaded as if it was ready for service and then the trailers and semi trailers fully equipped are weighed and added to that weight. Lastly, the weight of the max load that the truck is able to carry is added to the figure. All three of these figures added up will be the total weight of the vehicle and you will use this number to figure out how much tax you will need to pay.  If your truck is below 55,000 pounds you will not need to pay any extra truck tax.  If your truck weighs between 55,000 to 75,000 pounds you will have to pay $100 plus an extra $22 for each 1,000 pounds over 55,000 pounds.  If your truck exceeded 75,000 pounds you will be charged a flat rate of $550 each year for said truck.
